Obituary for Patricia Ann "Pat" Batema (fligor)

Patricia Ann "Pat" Batema (fligor)
Patricia Ann Batema

On October 9, 2016, God raised up Our Angel.

Pat (Mom) was 76 years old, a devoted wife, mother, sister, friend, and volunteer.

Married to Charles Medere at 18 years old, together they started a beautiful family with four children. At the age of 38, Dad passed away and Mom now 35 years old, found herself with a 15, 13, 11, and a 9 year old to raise. Two years later, God blessed us when she met a very special man: Richard Batema. They fell in love and married. Together for 39 years, they did everything together. As a young family, they enjoyed camping, traveling, gardening, and making wood crafts. Her pride and joy was always her family.

As the children grew, Mom's interest turned to helping others as she always put others first. When Mom got involved, she was committed. To her it was all about volunteering and donating for others. Concerned with those home bound, she delivered for Mobile Meals. A very good baker, Mom found that the guests at the Ronald McDonald House would enjoy her baked goods when back from the hospital. Mom enjoyed sewing, and was a very good seamstress. Using her talents, she made pillows for the "Mended Hearts". Mom, concerned with the homeless in the cold, made hundreds of fleece hats and donated them to various organizations for adults and children. Mom made lap blankets for Heartland Hospice to comfort those at the end of their journey. Another organization she sewed for was "Little Dresses for Africa" where dresses were made out of pillow cases and sent to children in Africa. A few years ago, Mom found an organization (Gabriel's Gowns) that provided burial gowns for newborns who never came home. Made out of donated wedding dresses, these beautiful gowns were provided to parents who lost their little Angels. Mom had made roughly 150 gowns and was still sewing when she became ill. Mom was born to help others. We are so blessed to have had her in our lives.

Preceding Mom were her wonderful parents: Robert and Alice Fligor and first husband Charles Medere.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband Richard Batema; children Jeff (Karen) Medere, Doug (Leia) Medere, Kimberlee Medere and Kelly (Jeff) Ludlow; grandchildren Kristi, Derek, Jonathon, Jordan, Devin and Samantha; sister Barbara Pochank and brother Michael (Debbie) Fligor. Also going to miss Mom are her beloved dogs Casey and Pierre.

The family would like to thank the Flower Hospital 6th floor staff along with the Hickman Cancer staff. Special thanks is extended to the Angels at the Ebeid Hospice Residence.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ebeid Hospice Residence or the Ronald McDonald House.

The family will receive friends at the Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home at 3453 Heatherdowns Blvd at Byrne Road on Wednesday, October 12th from 2-8 pm where a prayer service will be conducted at 7pm. There will be no burial service as Mom, always putting others first, chose to donate her body to the University of Toledo Medical College, her final donation. Please sign her condolence page at www.berstickerscottfuneralhome.com.
